The latest formations in Svalbard were photographed by Christian Åslund, an experienced Arctic photographer with a scientific and emotional eye. With icicle chandeliers dangling like glass lungs, staircases disappearing into blue haze, and a human figure dwarfed by glistening arches, his photographs have an almost hallowed quality. But there is a deeper sense of urgency pulsing beneath the aesthetic delight.

Arctic sea ice has drastically decreased—by about half since the early 20th century—in the face of accelerating warming. Forecasts now predict summers without ice by the middle of the century, according to climate scientist Julienne Stroeve. Our perspective of these caverns is altered by the fact that the last time such conditions were in the area was some 130,000 years ago. They are not remnants from antiquity. They are disappearing sneak peeks.

As was to be expected, critics questioned Åslund’s photographs’ veracity, mirroring the doubts he encountered in 2002. However, as he recently noted, the lens is truthful. “The idea behind this project is that even though the image conveys more than a thousand words, people are still hesitant to believe it,” he stated. A group of explorers recently got the unique opportunity to enter one of these recently formed glacier caves while visiting Svalbard. They rumbled across ice slopes in a clumsy army transport. Their guide jokingly said, “It’s designed for safety, not comfort.” When they got to the edge, the laughter quickly subsided.

Equipped with headlights and metal cleats, they started to descend. The route wound into rooms that glowed with reflected light, wending from melted summer water that was now solid beneathfoot. Stalactites slumped like glass that has been blown. One hiker pointed out the forms—which were created by temperature, gravity, and time—that they called handlebars, chandeliers, and drapes.

The air inside was quite comfortable. Sweating from the ascent, some even took off their heavy outerwear. The cave became a site of astonishment, inquiry, and collective discovery for a few hours. The same tour was canceled last year. Another reminder that these paths aren’t guaranteed is that the cave was too unstable at the time.

One picture of a ladder disappearing down an icy passage caught my attention, and I recall having a complex emotion. Yes, admiration, but a silent pain as well. At that moment, I realized how simple it is to lose something before it is completely understood.

Åslund’s use of visual storytelling goes beyond simply recording ice caves. He is emphasizing how fleeting they are. These are transitional moments captured right before collapse, not tourist attractions. Through his eyes, we see a process developing rather than a permanent structure.

The way these photos serve as both visual wonders and climate evidence is especially inventive. They are used by scientists to track changes in underground water flow, melt behavior, and glacier thickness. They are used by photographers to elicit discussion and even skepticism. However, it’s possible that both functions have the same purpose: drawing attention.

More information is being made available to the public in engaging ways thanks to intentional collaborations between polar researchers and artists. People will stop before a glacial cathedral etched in indigo, but they might ignore a climate report. The emotional pull is very evident.

Rapid melting over the last ten years has revealed new submerged formations that had been covered in ice for ages. They are referred to as “windows into melt” by certain scientists. The term “ghost architecture” is preferred by some. Both refer to a dynamic, delicate phenomenon that is developing more quickly than models were anticipated.

As projections increasingly imply, if these structures disappear, then Åslund’s photographs go beyond mere art. They are recorded. Their silence turns into evidence.
