With its ambitions to become a high-income nation, Malaysia has the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) as a transformational piece of infrastructure. The ECRL Malaysia will facilitate the first high-speed rail service in Malaysia. This will help close the economic divide between Malaysia’s heavily urbanized and developed western region and the lesser-developed, yet resource-rich, eastern region. The rail will connect the two in a pace never experienced before, in addition to improving trade and tourism in the country’s economically central eastern Peninsular Malaysia. Rail and integrated transport networks will become more developed and sophisticated as the ECRL nears completion in late December 2026, signalling the start of a new era in the country’s EDL transport. This will be over 60% of the 665 km ECRL. What is the ECRL Malaysia? A Brief Overview of Malaysia's Flagship Rail Initiative
With China, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) initiative launched the construction of ECRL Malaysia, built as more than just a railway, but as a change for socio-economic upliftment, especially for the east coast states. This railway aims to change the states. This is the first step of many to come. Some highlights of the project are:

The ECRL Malaysia is projected RM18.4 billion GDP contribution over 20 years. The project changes include two significant changes the first one in 2018 where the distances were shortened but the travel times were extended and with the 2021 update restoring more of the route but adding an additional 25km to make the travel more optimal. MRL is in charge of operations and the ECRL is now able to do 5.6 million passengers and 13.7 million tonnes of freight. From here the project is now expected to add 18.4 billion to the GDP in the next 20 years.
ECRL Malaysia Route: Mapping the Path from East to West
The ECRL has a route that goes through various ecosystems including coastal plains, rainforests, and mountains. They designed a route that would have a good balance between environmentally friendly and economically advantageous. They split the route into sections A, B, and C, and they start from the northeast then curves southwest. Once the route finishes, it will integrate with the current west coast network and the KTM Komuter, and the Port Klang line.
Section A: Kelantan to Terengganu (Coastal Connectivity)
The northernmost area is around 200 km long and connects the industrial areas of Kelantan and the Terengganu Petrochemical Industry. It starts in Kota Bharu and goes along the coast until it cuts inland through tunnels and viaducts built to deal with the hilly landscape.
Section B: Terengganu to Pahang (Resource Corridor)
Spanning 250 km, Section B delves into Pahang’s palm oil and mining regions, facilitating freight from Kuantan Port. The route navigates sandy beaches and river valleys, with spurs for industrial access.
Section C: Pahang to Selangor (Urban Integration)
The last 215 kilometers has a very important area of alinement in the north through Bentong and Gombak with the 18 km tunnel that’s the longest in the whole project. A southern extension that’s dual gauge from Temerloh goes all the way to Putrajaya and Westport. This section of the route crosses the economic center of the Peninsular. In Gombak, to integrate the area with KL, there will be parts of the route that will be underground.
There will be 50 kilometers of the route that will be made of tunnel and elevated structures to make the route be multifunctional to withstand the normal flooding and the landsides of the east coast. The MRL website has interactive maps that show the route of the ECRL that acts as a ‘landbridge’ to East Malaysia and also improves the trade of the Asia-Pacific region through the sea ports.
ECRL Stations: 20 Key Stops Enhancing Regional Accessibility
There are 20 stations at the ECRL that are strategically located throughout the route. 14 stations are for passengers only, 5 combine passenger-freight, and 1 is for freight only. Short-term those stops will service customers, but in the long run, they will also help develop cities in areas that are neglected, like Kelantan and Kuantan.

ECRL 2025 Progress Update: 89% Complete and Accelerating Towards Launch
The ECRL had a completion rate of 89% as of October 2025. This figure was 81% in April, 88% in early November, and keeps showing progress. This progress is particularly notable as there have been considerable delays in the project timeline in the past. Datuk Seri Darwis Razak, the CEO of MRL, stated that the project is “on track” to achieve 90% completion by the end of December 2025. He added that the core section of Kota Bharu- Gombak is expected to be completed by December 2026 and full operations will commence in January 2027.
Key milestones in late 2025 include:
- Track Laying and Electrification: Over 90% of tracks installed using GPS-guided machines, with electrification at 85% in Terengganu and Pahang (90% and 86% sectional completion, respectively).
- Tunnel Breakthroughs: The Genting Tunnel reached full excavation in September, while Gombak’s underground works are 95% done.
- Rolling Stock Arrival: The first CR200J electric multiple units and HXD3C locomotives rolled off in China in November, following initial sets in October. Full delivery is slated for December 2025, with testing to begin Q1 2026.
- Station Construction: 18 of 20 stations at structural completion, with fit-outs underway for retail and amenities.
.Unforeseen difficulties like unanticipated weather in Kelantan have been managed through expedited construction to ensure the deadline is still kept by 2026. The southern spur to Putrajaya is a bit behind at 75 percent but is set to be a priority for 2028. With new Transport Minister Anthony Loke, the project remains the same, signifying bipartisan commitment to the project.
Economic and Social Impacts: Why the ECRL Matters for Malaysia's Future
In addition to transportation, the ECRL is a social and economic equalizer. There is the potential to create 40,000 jobs (many of which have already been filled) and 13,000 permanent employment opportunities, while also unlocking 1.2 trillion venerable business opportunities under the 13th Malaysia Plan. The industries on the East Coast, particularly palm oil, production tourism, and halal manufacturing will have direct access to the West Coast and could possibly increase their exports two fold. In terms of the environment, the ECRL is projected to take 30% of freight off of the roads which will lead to 1.2 million tonnes reduced emissions annually.
Seamless rail connections will allow tourists to Cherating beaches and the islands of Kuala Terengganu, in addition to easing KL congestion with Gombak’s integration of the MRT. As Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said, “The ECRL is not just tracks. The ECRL is tracks to prosperity.”
Looking Ahead: ECRL's Role in Malaysia's 2027 Vision
2026 core construction will be complete, enabling 2027 to start trial runs and soft launch services. Following this will be extensions including the Pengkalan Kubor northern link. Aiming for ASEAN connectivity, the ECRL positions Malaysia as a rail superpower in Southeast Asia.
